"Iron, rethought!

New Collaborative Research Centre 1487

2021/11/26

The German Research Foundation is establishing the new Collaborative Research Centre 1487 to study iron from a chemical and materials science perspective.

As many applications currently rely on the use of critical metals, the SFB aims to explore how the versatile, ubiquitous and sustainable element iron can take on new functions by manipulating its environment in the material – and thus replace non-sustainable metals in the future. Within the framework of the SFB 1487, the ATFT group is working on the transformation of soft magnetic iron into a “green” permanent magnetic material through interstitial atoms such as nitrogen, carbon and boron. Spokesperson of the SFB 1487 is Ulrike Kramm.
