Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Durst, head of the research group Physical Metallurgy, and Prof. Dr. Oliver Gutfleisch, head of the research group Functional Materials, have been elected to Review Boards of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG).

Professor Durst will be a member of the “Fachkollegium Werkstoffwissenschaften” (Research Board Materials Engineering), where he will be involved in the subject “Mechanische Eigenschaften von metallischen Werkstoffen und ihre mikrostrukturellen Ursachen” (Mechanical properties of metallic materials and their microstructural causes). Professor Gutfleisch will contribute his expertise to the “Fachkollegium Materialwissenschaft” (Research Board Materials Science), in the subject “Herstellung und Eigenschaften von Funktionsmaterialien” (Production and Properties of Functional Materials).

About the DFG Review Boards

The DFG Review Boards evaluate proposals to the DFG in a three-stage process consisting of review, evaluation and decision. They compare all the proposals submitted to them in order to identify the projects most worthy of funding within the given financial framework. In this way, they ensure that proposals are assessed according to uniform standards across all DFG programs. In addition, the Review Boards are also involved in the further development and design of the DFG's funding programs and in the discussion of funding policy issues.

Every four years, almost 150,000 eligible researchers decide who sits on a Review Board in the Review Board Election. The elected board members are assigned to a subject according to the focus of their academic work. Several subjects that are scientifically interlinked form a Review Board and thus a meaningful subject comparison area for the evaluation.
