Direct and indirect nanostructuring for functionalization of metallic surfaces

In a cooperation between the Physical Metallurgy Department of TU Darmstadt and the Institute for Functional Materials of Saarland University, the functional surface properties of metallic materials are to be specifically influenced by microtopographic surface structuring.

In addition to mechanical microembossing, this will also be done using laser interference-based techniques, so that structures in the nanometer and micrometer range can be created. The focus is on comparing the process limitations, material influence and surface functionalization of the two structuring methods. The objective of the project is to elucidate the processes involved in the direct and indirect structuring of metallic surfaces and to demonstrate their individual shaping of functional surface properties using the example of wettability.
