Advisory board with TU Professor Weidenkaff presents new water report

2024/10/15

As a member of the Wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen (WBGU), TU Professor Anke Weidenkaff today co-presented a new report on water management. The paper entitled Gutachten zum Wassermanagement was presented at the Federal Press Conference in Berlin. The key message is that national and international water policy must adapt to progressive and accelerated changes in the global water cycle and respond to them quickly and comprehensively.

Climate protection, the protection of ecosystems and climate-resilient, socially balanced water management are the most important measures to prevent water emergencies, according to the report, which the advisory board presented to Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke and the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Mario Brandenburg. What is needed is an international water strategy that recognizes the protection of water resources as a common concern of mankind and strengthens and interlinks existing processes and conventions.

Weidenkaff has been a member of the WBGU since 2020. She heads the research group of Materials and Resource Management at the Institute of Materials Science (Department of Materials and Earth Sciences) at TU Darmstadt. The Advisory Council was set up in 1992 to analyze global environmental and development problems and their consequences and to develop recommendations for action and research for the German government.
