Since its development in 2008, macroscopic X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) has allowed to gain insight about the composition and build-up of polychrome works of art by means of elemental distribution maps, obtained in situ through non-destructive analysis. Such scanning instrument provides chemical information from the entire object (both on and below the surface) while the ensuing analytical results are presented in the form of an image. In this way, the resulting images display the distribution of the artists' materials over the surface and data that can be easily interpreted by all stakeholders such as conservators, art historians, curators etc. Unlike traditional chemical point analysis, MA-XRF scanning converts numerical and spectral data into images, succeeding in combining the visual aspect of the existing imaging methods with the advantages of spectroscopic analysis. The main challenge is to carry out applied research to improve and optimize the existing MA-XRF scanning technology by providing set-ups- and software- oriented feedbacks as well as to adapt the scanner for the study of non-manufactured (natural) heritage. For the latter, the advantages and limitations of using MA-XRF in conjunction with other methods of analysis, must be considered.
