Professor Gutfleisch is new acatech member

Head of the Functional Materials research group has been elected into the German Academy of Science and Engineering

Professor Dr.-Ing. habil. Oliver Gutfleisch has been elected as a new member of acatech – the German Academy of Science and Engineering. Gutfleisch has been working at TU Darmstadt since 2012 and heads the Department of Functional Materials at the Faculty of Materials and Earth Sciences. He is also one of the scientific directors of the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Materials Recycling and Resource Strategies in Hanau and has headed a Max Planck research group at the MPI for Iron Research in Düsseldorf since 2020.

Gutfleisch's research focuses on energy-efficient magnetic materials, sustainable resource strategies and innovative materials for biomedical and industrial applications. A particular focus is on the recycling and substitution of strategic metals such as rare earths. As a new member, Professor Gutfleisch will be actively involved in the thematic networks “Materials Science and Engineering” and “Energy and Resources”.

The acatech academy, which is funded by the German federal and state governments, advises politicians and society on issues relating to the future of technology science and technology policy. As the national academy and voice of the technological sciences in Germany and abroad, acatech brings together over 600 personalities from science and industry. More than 20 current and retired professors from TU Darmstadt are currently members of acatech.
