Givord Award for Advancing Magnetism to Professor Gutfleisch

The European Magnetism Association (EMA) awards every three years the Dominique Givord Award for Advancing Magnetism in Europe to an excellent Scientist, who has significantly helped to push forward magnetism research and the magnetism community in Europe.

EMA's highest award goes to Oliver Gutfleisch for Mastery of Hysteresis of magnetic materials for energy efficient technologies, including permanent magnets and magnetocaloric materials, making magnetism-based energy conversion sustainable.

Oliver Gutfleisch studied Material Science at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. In 1992, he joined the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham as a PhD student where he graduated in 1995. He then became a postdoctoral fellow and group leader for “Functional Magnetic Materials and Hydrides”at the Leibniz institute IFW Dresden. Since 2012 he is a full professor at the University of Darmstadt, he set up as one of the scientific directors (2012-2021) the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Materials Recycling and Resource Strategies Hanau and leads also since 2020 the Max-Planck Research Group “De Magnete” at the MPI for Iron research in Düsseldorf.

His research interests include permanent magnets for power applications, solid state energy efficient caloric cooling at room temperature and for hydrogen liquefaction, ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, additive manufacturing, functional high entropy alloys, magnetic nanoparticles for biomedicine, with emphasis on tailoring magnetic, structural and chemical properties on the nanoscale. His work extends to the criticality of strategic metals such as rare earth elements and their recycling and substitution.
