“Hessen schafft Wissen” as guest in Functional Materials

2021/11/22

The Science Reporter from “Hessen schafft Wissen” visited Prof. Oliver Gutfleisch, Head of Functional Materials at the Department of Materials and Geosciences, at the TU and presents his work in a video report. Gutfleisch researches materials for the energy transition at the TU, especially in the field of rare earths. These are used in high-performance permanent magnets, for example in electric motors and generators, but are also present in everyday life. For example, mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines or audio equipment only work thanks to magnets based on rare earths. “Magnetic materials are key elements of many future technologies,” Gutfleisch summarises. For example, magnetic technology could be used to develop a completely new, efficient cooling technology. In the application laboratory, Gutfleisch demonstrates magnetic cooling to the guest reporter and provides information about the training paths in the diverse world of materials science.
