Fermi level engineering for tuning piezoelectric properties

Overview

Project A06 is focusing on Fermi energy limits and charge transfer levels of two key novel co-doped lead-free piezoceramics systems NBT-BT and BZT-BCT. The basic fundamental problem is one of phase stability, which can be enhanced using Fermi level engineering. Our working hypothesis is that co-doping with acceptors and donors enhances the solubility, but denies the Fermi level shift of the mere acceptor doping. These materials are synthesized, the structure is determined and the relevant electromechanical properties are assessed. For the critical evaluation of Fermi energy, charge transfer levels, and structure collaborations with other projects in theory and experiment are vital.
