A03
Fermi level engineering in oxygen transport membranes

Overview

Project A03 synthesizes 3d transition metal doped brownmillerite-type Ba2In2O5 by using sustainable microwave heated soft chemistry processes to unravel the role of the Fermi energy in these mixed ionic electronic conductors. The focus is on the interrelations between crystal structure, microstructure, electronic structure, and the resulting oxygen permeation flux. This allows material usage as gas permeable oxygen transport membranes, e.g. for extraction of oxygen radicals from a CO2 plasma. The Fermi level relocation of these materials by doping (research area A) and surface gas adsorbates (research area B) is studied experimentally and theoretically in collaboration with other projects.
