Bernhard Kaiser studied Chemistry at the Philipps-University Marburg and at the University of Bristol, England. He received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Philipps-University Marburg in 1989 for the thesis „Metal-Nonmetal transition in isolated Mercury clusters studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy“, supervised by Prof. F. Hensel and funded by the Land Hessen through a graduate research fellowship. In 1989 he joined the group of Prof. K. Sattler at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study the properties of clusters on surfaces by STM. In 1991 he rejoined Prof. Hensels group in Marburg to extend his postdoctoral research on cluster-surface-interactions. In 1993 he moved on to the Walther-Nernst-Institute for Physical Chemistry of Humboldt University in Berlin to start his habilitation in the group of Prof. K. Rademann. He finished his habilitation thesis entitled “Nanostructured surfaces by mass-selected clusters: basic phenomena“ in 1998 and received the facultas docendi and the venia legend in Physical Chemistry from Humboldt-University in 1999 and 2000, respectively. In 2005 he joined the group of Prof. R. Schäfer at the chemistry department at TU Darmstadt to work on the catalytic properties of nanoparticles and clusters by TPD. In July 2008 he moved to the Center of Smart Interfaces at the TU Darmstadt to lead the newly founded Electrochemistry and Nanocatalysis group. He was awarded an Erskine Visiting fellowship of the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2001, and he is coauthor of several educational books on chemistry.
