2024/04/26
Under the lead of Thomas Hannappel from TU Ilmenau, this detailed article came to live in collaboration with and Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Hofmann among others ( Prof. Dr. Wolfram Jaegermann). DOI: 10.1002/solr.202301047
Artificial leaf technology shows promise for addressing energy storage and mobility challenges in sustainable energy systems by synthesizing chemical fuels from sunlight. However, realizing efficient solar-driven artificial leaf structures requires specialized materials and engineering strategies.
In this information-dense review, Hannappel et al. argue for the employment of multiabsorber structures. Challenges include integrating photovoltaic and electrochemical functionalities, optimizing electrocatalysts, and developing scalable devices. Scientific efforts up to now are summarized to provide a knowledge base for future device design and research questions.
