A Deep Dive into Materials Science

The Hobit continues along Lichtwiese.

Following this year's Hobit contact event at Karo5, we invited all interested visitors to come and explore their potential college campus. Fifteen high school students accepted the invitation.

Once again this year, the Institute of Materials Science was represented at Hobit in Karo5. In the morning, the booth—where professors and students engaged in conversation with visitors—was very well attended.

To give everyone a deeper insight into our daily academic life, we then invited all interested guests to join us at the Lichtwiese. There, they got a glimpse into our academic program and had the opportunity to attend a workshop in a seminar group, among other activities. Of course, the event wouldn’t have been complete without a final hoverboard ride accompanied by Dr. Philipp Komisinskiy and Jürgen Schreeck from the Thin Films research group.

  • Together with Felix Schulze and Oliver Petry from the Physical Metallurgy Division, the participants explored the properties of steel and conducted a hardness test, among other activities.
  • Dr. Eszter Piros from the Thin Films Division focused on the topic of memristors. The students learned a great deal about the materials used and the structure of this type of electrical component.
  • Dr. Xiao Yu and Muyu Ma from the Department of Materials Science and Resource Management explained to the participants the process of plasma-assisted conversion of plastic waste, which allows so-called waste to be recycled into valuable products.
  • Under the guidance of Dr. Christian Dietz and Marivn Hoffer (Department of PoS), graphene samples were even produced using the Scotch tape method, and the students subsequently determined the layer thickness and microstructure using an atomic force microscope.

We would like to thank everyone at the institute for their contributions to this in-depth exploration of materials science! The opportunity to interact with students and researchers provided the target audience with valuable insight into potential academic programs and was considered extremely valuable.
