Dr. rer. nat. Franziska Scheibel is an experienced postdoc in the functional materials group of Prof. Gutfleisch since 2018. Her research interests are in the field of magnetocaloric and multicaloric materials for energy efficient caloric cooling. Therefore, she studies the effect of microstructure and other extrinsic and intrinsic properties on the magneto-structural phase transition, characterizing: the magnetic, structural and caloric response to different external stimuli (magnetic field, stress field and temperature); the transition dynamics in pulsed magnetic field; the effect of microstructure, defects and inhomogeneity on the caloric, magnetic and mechanical responses. She is experienced in the synthesis and processing of multi-crystalline materials such as Ni-Mn based Heusler alloys, Mn3GaC antiperovskites, Mn-Sb based pniktides. Currently, she is investigating the processing by additive manufacturing and other powder-based processing methods, including the upscaling of powder processing for these methods.

Before joining the Functional Materials Group, she received her Ph.D. at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the Department of Experimental Physics in the group of Prof. Farle. During her PhD thesis she synthesized and characterized different magnetocaloric materials with respect to the minimization of thermal hysteresis and its effect on the magnetocaloric effect. She studied physics at the University of Ulm, where she worked on the preparation and characterization of FePtCu thin films by laser ablation.
